Once upon a time there was a girl and a boy in a big town. Said the Boy to the Girl one day, "Be with me! Let our two selves join to form one whole." The Girl looked sadly at the Boy and said, "No. It is not to be." "Why?" exclaimed the Boy. "Because," the Girl replied, "You do not love me." "How do you say that? Surely I do! I ask of you, what must I do to prove my love to you?" pleaded the Boy. The Girl said, "You must be there when I need you to be, and gone when I need you to be. You are here now when I need to be alone, so it is obvious you do not love me." The Boy, exasperated, begged, "Oh come on now! That isn't fair. Be fair! I'll do ANYTHING!" "Okay," said the Girl, "You must be accepting of my every flaw. Take joy in my idiosyncracies and imperfections." The Boy considered this for a while, and said, "Well, I mean, you are a little rotund. Surely you cannot expect me to rejoice for an overweight bride, it just is not socially acceptable." To this the Girl said, "Aha! If you loved me, you would not try to change me. You would love me for who I am. And you would always do what is best for me, and never consider yourself." "Gah!" exclaimed the Boy. "Those are impossible requirements!" He stalked away, red-faced. A few weeks passed and the Girl heard nothing from the Boy until one day he came to her door. "You look well," she said. "Yes, for I am well." explained the Boy. "While away I found another, someone who I know when to be with, and whose flaws I enjoy. Someone who I would not change for the world, and only ever do what is best for her." "That is fabulous news!" said the Girl. "Why, then, have you come back here to-day?" The Boy answered, "To thank you, and to ask: How did you come to know love so well?" The Girl looked sadly at the Boy and said, "Because, I love you."
